The recently-launched IATA Aviation Safety Culture (I-ASC) employee survey provides airlines with unbiased insight that will allow them to track and benchmark their safety culture.
Safety culture can be assessed across IOSA organizational sections such as Flight Operations, Dispatch, and Cabin Operations, as well as organizational hierarchy. The results are de-identified and responses kept fully confidential.

Participating airlines will be able to use I-ASC to facilitate an effective Safety Management System (SMS) and contribute to improvements in safety performance by identifying safety culture gaps, and addressing them through action plans and training.
“The I-ASC survey provides airlines with specific information regarding their safety culture—something that is typically perceived as not very quantifiable,” said Mariam Khojayan, IATA Manager, Safety Management Systems.
Early adopter Virgin Australia, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of benchmarking.
“It [the I-ASC survey] has proved beneficial to review the results with those in the different business entities, and similarly the divisions were able to compare themselves against others within the airline group,” said Michael Chapman, General Manager, Safety Systems, Virgin Australia.

“The results documentation is presented in a format that was easy to digest, which made our feedback sessions more palatable for the audience.
“In time, we look forward to options to compare the results achieved with those in other airlines—both in our region and further afield.”
It is recommended that—depending on the maturity of their safety culture—airlines carry out the I-ASC survey either annually or every two years.
“One survey will not be enough,” added Khojayan. “It is something that needs to be done on a regular basis. This cycle will help measure and demonstrate improvements to their safety culture over time.”
