The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced a new set of awards to recognise diversity in aviation.

Launching the IATA Diversity & Inclusion awards, IATA Director General and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said the changing face of the air transport sector is to be celebrated.

“Aviation is the Business of Freedom—the essence of aviation is building a global community by connecting people, businesses and cultures across great distances,” said de Juniac.

“Ten million people work in the aviation industry to make this happen, and it is important that this workforce reflects the amazing diversity and inclusion that it fosters in our society.

“By launching these awards, we want to recognize and celebrate the great work that is being done to take the industry into the future.”

Sponsored by Qatar Airways, the awards include three categories aimed at different areas of the aviation sector.

The Inspirational Role Model Award is open to any female over 30 who holds a senior position in the industry and has displayed demonstrable success in delivering an aviation agenda and promoting gender diversity.

Open to all females under 30, the High Flyer Award will recognize someone who has begun to develop her career, shown thought leadership skills, and is an inspiration to others.

Airlines will also be rewarded, with the Diversity and Inclusion Team Award open to all IATA members. It will recognize carriers that have seen tangible changes in their diversity through concerted efforts to improve inclusivity and deliver change.

“Aviation thrives with diversity and provides great employment opportunities to talented people in every corner of our planet, but there is much room to improve,” said His Excellency Akbar Al-Baker, Qatar Airways Group CEO and Chair of the IATA Board of Governors.

“In sponsoring these awards, we are committing to do better ourselves, to building awareness and to inspiring change.”

Nominations for the IATA Diversity & Inclusion Awards are open until March 31. The accolades will be awarded annually, beginning at IATA’s 75th Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Seoul, South Korea in June.
